help Need Pergola Rafter Span advice submitted My pergola spans about 12' and I used 2x6, 16" o.c. They are rated for up to 15' and I expect only minor sag.
Fewer posts means more stress on each post. We solve this wide span problem by placing two posts close together on either end of the span. Our typical pine pergola beams are capable of supporting a 16' pergola with post centers 15' 1.75" center to center.
For example: a 12-foot eight-inch pergola would get an even number of rafters, and a 13-foot eight-inch pergola would receive an odd number of rafters. For instance, if you have a pergola that is nine feet across its wide end, spacing the rafters a foot off center is easy.
I would add another pair of posts in the middle of the 16' span with a third beam so the 2X6's don't sag, or break. 3 Pergola beam span questions.
The pergola may someday support vines. I've found some online span charts, but they don't really apply to pergolas, which carry so much less load than floor/ceiling framing. Any help on the beam
You can easily span 12' with a 2x12 for a pergola as long as your load is not crazy. What is going on top of the 2x12's? 2x2's? I would set my posts on 12' centers and cantilever 4' on each side.
You can use 50 x228 2x8 pine timber will work over that span. Pergola does not carry any load. The trick is when using spans longer than 3.0m 10ft is to brace the timber in some way that it will not twist with weather conditions. You can make a 38 x 38 screen over the top of the pergola. that will give some shade and will brace the timber.
With a 18' span it would certainly sag even if you used 2x6 yellow pine. That is just too long of a span for wood. What you might do is run a 1/4" dado in the bottom edge 3" deep and glue a piece of flat steel in the wood and then put some kind of trim over it to hide the dado.
I am planning for a pergola with overall dimensions of 16' wide by 12' deep. The material will be pressure treated pine. I want to limit the support posts to 4 and need to know the maximum span between the posts to avoid sagging. I am planning on using 6" x 6" x 12' posts set in concrete.
Pergola construction - beam span without sagging I'm building a deck and am going to add a pergola above it for a little shade and possibly some vines. My main concern is sagging in the beams and joists.
I am building myself a pergola. It will have 6x6 posts, 2x8 beams bolted to each side of the posts spanning approx. 17 ft. across the back patio. 2x6 rafters every 12 inches will run atop the beams.
Pergola Beam and Rafter Sizes and Spans I'm planning a cedar pergola over my deck. Posts will be 6"X6" and will be notched to accept a "sandwich" beam of two 2"X?"s.
The local lumber yard is more familiar with structural aspects of homes and decks rather than pergolas. I know with less load you can use smaller members, but the span chart I have only shows ratings for cedar as deck joists, which is the same one the lumber yard has. Joists: unsupported span of 12'-5 1/2" with 2x2 cedar slats 5-1/2" o.c.
I did a pergola with a 16' span with 2x6's a while back and used douglas fir. I only got warping in one piece but was able to bend it back and fasten it. I t looks fine.
To shorten the span, install two additional posts to bring the centre distance to around a maximum of 10' less if possible . So for this particular pergola we'd need to position posts at 5' in from the outside posts, giving the two 5' spaces and a 10' space in the middle.
I am sketching a plan for a pergola to build over my QT area, and have been searching for a chart on how much weight a 2x6 or 2x8, or 2x10 can carry for various spans between posts.
Re: Maximum span of a joist for a pergola 06-07-2016, 05:06 PM no point guessing until the OP responds, my take was he was asking about rafters for a 28' span so 16' 2x6 would probably be fine if made into a truss with or without a centre hanging post.
